The Importance of Sleep
According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need on average 7-9 hours of sleep per night, while many average only about 5! Many play the “catch up” game, bingeing sleep wherever possible, but it’s been found that long-term this does not compare to the benefits of satisfactory sleep each night.
Getting a good night’s sleep can improve your mood, health habits (diet), and overall quality of life. In contrast, not getting enough sleep can leave you feeling lethargic, grumpy, and reaching for foods and beverages during the day that are high in calories, caffeine, and empty carbohydrates; actually depleting you further.
Developing a Sleep Routine
To be our most productive and best selves during the day, it can be most helpful to have a ‘sleep routine’ at night. Ideas of a sleep routine range, but our favorites include: having a holistic snack or cup of tea to unwind, turning off all electronics and screens at a certain time, reducing noise and activity, partaking in a calming activity like reading or deep breathing/meditating, and keeping the bedroom quiet, dark, and clean for a pleasant sleep experience.
It’s important to note that a sleep routine should take place 1-2 hours before sleeping, so it is not rushed, and so if you are drinking tea or eating anything (like this smoothie) your body has time to digest and empty one last time before resting.

- 1 banana
